Best of Bali – 4 Unexpected Delights

Bali Beach SunsetBali is very well known as a vacation spot for spending time with family, blowing off the heat from a stressful job, and just relaxing and unwinding. Located in Indonesia, Bali has 33 provinces and is known throughout the world for unique and diverse landscapes. It has many coral reefs and absolutely stunning white sand beaches. There are a few black beaches as well.

Bali CeremonyThe most fascinating thing I found in Bali was their beautiful culture. The sculptures, wood carvings, handcrafts, paintings and the Balinese orchestra music was breathtaking. However, not everyone is interested in going to Bali for the sake of experiencing culture only. Instead, most people just like to go there to laze on the islands and enjoy the exotic spas.
Bali Spa TreatmentIn Bali, the art of healing has been passed down from generation to generation, from father to son, and from mother to daughter. Many exotic spas around the islands offer healing therapies to provide guests with a relaxed environment where they could enjoy solace. When I went to Bali, I came across some people who had specifically traveled from far parts of the world to enjoy Balinese spa treatments. More than anything else, they were interested in herbal massages, facials, deep tissue massages, yoga and the most famous Ayurvedic Chakra Dhara Massage. Ayurvedic Chakra Dhara Massage involves slow and repetitive movements to sooth, stimulate and remove impurities and toxins from the body. This massage is also known to relieve muscle stiffness and pain.Traditionally I’m not a spa person, and that was definitely not the reason I went to Bali. So when I asked one of the tourists why she had specifically come here to enjoy the spas, she insisted that I join her for a treatment. What I enjoyed the most is that most spas are based around Indonesian tradition and nature, completely enriched with Balinese culture. They use fresh spices and herbs from surrounidng islands of Indonesia as well. In addition to the impressive setting, the signature treatments they had were absolutely new to me such as the ritual footbath, Boreh exfoliation, Jamu drinks and Javanese lulur.
Bali CuisineDining in Bali is a delight. Since I’m fond of trying different cuisines, I chose to eat both at five star hotel restaurants and out in breezy open bamboo cafes. I found a great variety of dishes available for any budget. The everyday food of Bali consists of rice with vegetables, a small portion of meat or fish, along with a range of condiments. This food is typically cooked in the early morning and can be consumed at any time of the day. Compared to that, the food at festivals is quite elaborate, like suckling pig, which is a banquet favorite.
Night Markets
Bali Night MarketI couldn’t work up the appetite of eating fresh at the night market, but it was still an experience of a lifetime. The smells, the thrills, the noises and the sights were fantastic. One great thing about a vacation in Bali is that you can always find cheap flights to Bali, which means you can have a great experience at a low cost and enjoy a whole different culture, beauty and food.
