Soon the temperatures will begin to ease from summer’s heat and cool breezes will blow down from the hills and mountains.  Before long, the urge to dress in bright orange will become irresistible.  No, not for Halloween – for a great guys getaway to the wilderness!  It’s nearly time to gather your buddies and take to the woods for a hunting, fishing and laughs.   Combine the all-time favorite guy activities of fishing, hunting and hiking and go RVing and camping in some of America’s best spots.

While prices fluctuate based on the season, location, availability and size, a general starting range is $100 per night.  Factor in fees to park the RV (starting at $10 per night) and gas.  Most RV rental companies offer housekeeping packages (dishes, pots, pans, bed linens, etc.) for a nominal fee, or you can bring your own (unlike air travelers, RVers can bring anything they want on a trip — including pets).

Guys Fishing

Chandler Hills Campground, Boyne Falls, Mich.: With opportunities to find big game, such as deer, bear and bobcat, this campground is in the middle of thousands of acres of state land . “We also have the full spread of upland game, Turkey Grouse and Woodcock. We are also within 5 miles of two fantastic freshwater lakes full of fish from trout to perch and one has a new ADA launch ramp,” said co-owner Dennis Hass. This park is also known for mushroom hunting.

Carrollwoods RV Campground and Vineyard, Longs, S.C.: Both hunting and fishing are available at this eastern South Carolina park. “We have hunting clubs, game lands, the Wacamaw River and the Atlantic Ocean all within 16 miles of us,” said Bryon Carroll, Carrollwoods’ owner. “We have a stocked fishing pond on site with bass and crappie. And several lakes within a 10-minute drive”.

Chimeny Park Resort, Mission, Texas: This park sits along the banks of the Rio Grande River, where you’ll have the opportunity to cast for catfish and largemouth bass and enjoy great boating and kayaking.  “Whether you want to fish from its bank or launch your own boat, the fishing is plentiful,” said park manager Wallena Haynes.

Cross Creek RV Park, Lake Ozark, Mo.: A 10-acre fishing lake stocked with bass, crappie, bluegill and catfish awaits at this park. Rent a paddleboat or rowboat to find the best fishing spots. “The campground is located one mile off the highway, so it’s peaceful and surrounded by hundreds of acres of woods. There are plenty of hunting opportunities nearby for deer and turkey,” said park owner John Peters.

Deer Run RV Resort, Crossville, Tenn.: Located next to the Catoosa Wildlife Management Area, an 80,000-acre wildlife management preserve, this p ark offers hunting during the fall, winter and spring.

Kamp Klamath RV Park and Campground, Klamath, Calif.:  With frontage along the Klamath River, this park offers excellent salmon fishing.  “While the taking of salmon has been banned along the Pacific Coast and in most rivers in the Golden State this year, the Klamath River is open and expectations are that the season will be the best in years,” said park owner Aaron Funk.

Little Orleans Campground & Park Area, Little Orleans, Md.: This park in western Maryland offers both hunting and fishing opportunities. “We have a stocked trout stream that runs through the property, where people fish all year,” said park owner Donna Wallizer. “We also have hunting available in the 53,000 Green Ridge State Forest, located adjacent to the campground.”

Port of Siuslaw Campground, Florence, Ore.:  This park has a great location two miles from the sand dunes and five miles from the ocean.  “We have the closest boat ramp to the ocean and one of the best salmon fishing rivers in Oregon,” said Ken Hill, assistant harbormaster and campground manager.

Sweetwater River Ranch, Texas Creek, Colo.: With frontage on both sides of the Arkansas River, one of the most rafted rivers in the United States, this park has an ideal location for boating and fishing. “We have outstanding trout fishing in spring and autumn, and outstanding rafting and kayaking in the summer,” said co-owner Marcia Rowland.

The Vineyards Campground on Grapevine Lake, Texas:  Sitting directly on the southeastern shores of Grapevine Lake, this park offers anglers the chance to catch black and white crappie, several species of bass and catfish. The park has its own boat ramp for easy access to the water, a large parking area for boat trailers as well as a covered, freestanding fish cleaning station. Hunting for feral hog, waterfowl and other small game is also possible from this campground.
