Australia’s Most Iconic Road Trip – Sydney to Cairns With All The Stop Along The Way

Australia is known all around the world as one of the dream destinations for RV enthusiasts – sunny beaches, dramatic scenery and great weather are just a few of the things that attract thousands of RV-rs  each year.  However, although you would probably have a hard time finding a soul that wouldn’t know about the beauty of cities like Sydney and Cairns, there’s actually an unforgettable trip that waits by traveling between the two cities. In the two and a half thousand kilometers that separate these two cities, you can find so many spectacular places to visit along the way that it would probably be impossible to see them all in one trip.

So here are the “cream of the crop” when it comes to sights on this dramatic road journey – one of your most memorable trips of a lifetime:

Sydney

Now I’ll be assuming that your trip begins in Sydney, so before leaving the city, you’ll want to make sure you don’t miss some amazing places right there.

This city is famous for its rich cultural and night life, as well as some amazing architecture. You probably know all about the city’s landmark, the Sydney Opera House, but you might not know that there’s a lot you can do there even without going to the opera. Sydney is a seaside town that is full of shops, restaurants and bars where you can feel the real rhythm of this vibrant Australian city.  In addition to exploring the historic Rocks section, journey over to Darling Harbour, Taronga Zoo, and perhaps take swim at famous Manly or Bondi Beach.

Port Macquarie

One of the biggest tourist destinations for Australians, Port Macquarie has a lot to offer to people of all ages and interests, but the biggest draws to the town is its serene beaches and beautiful waterways.  Stop for a visit here to mix in with the Aussies.

If you want a really unusual attraction, you simply must head down to the towns’ own Koala Hospital. Founded over forty years ago, it is the first and oldest Koala hospital in the entire country. There you can see one of the rarest and most unique creatures of the world up close, and you can actually feed them!

You can also find numerous entertainment options – go on boat rides, mini-golf, or even go on camel rides. This can be a great break from your RV and the time on the road, where you can just unwind and charge up for the next portion of your trip.

Gold Coast

Now when you enter Queensland, the first place you should stop by is the Gold Coast – it has a reputation as a haven for those who like to simply unwind and chill on the beach, but that’s definitely not all that you’ll find.

There is a wide choice of entertaining theme parks, some of the best in the country, including Seaworld, Wet’n’Wild, Dreamworld and a few others. There’s also the internationally-famous Surfers Paradise, which, don’t let the name fool you, is a lot more than just a place for surfers.

If you’re looking for a great place to park your RV for a few days while you explore the theme parks of the area, you can’t go wrong with the Gold Coast Holiday Park, located in Helensvale, just off Brisbane. It’s in the perfect location to have eight terrific theme parks just thirty minutes or less away, which gives you great flexibility to explore them all.

Fraser Island

As you’ll find your way north, you might want to get off mainland for a bit and get on Fraser Island, which is known as the worlds’ largest sand island.

Of course, that will mean leaving the RV in town and taking a ferry, but you’ll most likely find it well worth the hassle – after all why would you want to drive in an RV, when you can have an adrenaline pumping adventure on a 4×4!

Combine the serene beauty and calm of the islands’ nature with the ability to explore it on a four-wheeler, and you’ve got yourself quite a unique experience.

Arlie Beach

To get your first taste of the water adventures of the Great Barrier Reef, stop at the always popular Arlie Beach – it can be a good glimpse at what awaits you in Cairns, which is located just a few hundred kilometers to the north.

Of course, Arlie Beach has its own unique atmosphere and attractions – the biggest of which of course is its signature beaches, which offer a great blend of relaxing and engaging activities. Arlie Beach is also the best access point to reach the hauntingly beautiful Whitsundays Island.

Cairns

Finally, you make your arrival in Cairns, but that doesn’t mean your trip has to end. In fact, there’s so much to do in Cairns that you might find yourself much more occupied here than before.

The city is uniquely situated between two of the worlds’ most treasured natural wonders – the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest, oldest rainforest in the world.  So you know there are more incredible natural sights and activities available than one could possibly do in one trip. Some of the nearby locations that you really should try and visit in addition to the reef are Port Douglas, Cape Tribulation, and Kuranda – the village in a rainforest with its Aboriginal park expereince, and these are just to name a few!

Get on a boat and go whale watching, snorkeling, or simply lay back and enjoy the beautiful sights. When you finally reach Cairns, one thing you can be certain of is that you will not find yourself running out of things to do.
