As well as being home to some of the most renowned National Parks in Africa, a Tanzania safari holiday offers deserted islands, stunning mountains and unparalleled views. But it’s not just the spectacular scenery that Tanzania offers. Look a little closer and you’ll find everything from unique architecture to brightly coloured bird and marine life.
- The Island of Pemba
Pemba Island forms part of the Zanzibar Archipelago, although it is a much more remote offering than Zanzibar itself. Accessible by plane or boat, this tiny island is known as the Green Island on account of its lush vegetation and is home to a whole host of marine life. Rolling forests and white sand beaches are the backdrop to calm dive sites, where you can explore the untouched coral reefs without being interrupted by hundreds of pushy tourists. Grab an underwater camera and document your adventurous dives, where you’ll see a rainbow of tropical fish.
- The Serengeti National Park
The Serengeti is home to the great migration, which means that visiting the park is on many people’s bucket list. Many people come to the Serengeti to spot the Big 5 game, which in Africa are the lion, buffalo, leopard, rhino and elephant. Although crowded in peak season, the Serengeti also offers hot air balloon safaris, meaning you can escape the crowds and get a birds-eye view of the wildlife below. Take it from me – this is a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience. You’ll get up early so that you can rise up with the sun, floating above the vast plains as you watch the wildlife below without the hum of a 4X4 engine. It will give you a completely unique take on the usual safari experience.
- Mount Kilimanjaro

Even if you’re not planning on climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, the ‘Roof of Africa’ is a truly spectacular sight. As the highest mountain in Africa at over 19,000 feet, Mount Kilimanjaro is not an easy climb, although more and more people are attempting it. If you are going to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, you’ll find yourself with a range of stunning views on your ascent through the clouds and all the way up to the summit.
- Stone Town, Zanzibar
Stone Town is an Instagram-addict’s dream thanks to its distinctive mix of Arab, Persian, Indian and European architecture. The doors of Stone Town are famous for their intricate carvings, and holiday makers can often be seen snapping pictures of some of the most elaborate offerings. Walking through the town you’ll come across Swahili, Indian and Arab doors, identifiable by the different materials and types of carvings. Stone Town is also famous for its ‘barazas’ or benches which are often built down the side of narrow roads instead of pavements. Barazas were originally a way for Islamic men to receive visitors without them needing to enter into the house, as a way to maintain the privacy of their wives. Nowadays they are still used as a meeting point and walking around Stone Town you’ll see people relaxing on the benches, drinking sweet coffee and chatting.
- Lake Manyara
Lake Manyara National Park stretches across the Arusha and Manyara regions of Africa, and is home to Lake Manyara – a shallow lake home to a diverse range of wildlife. It often plays second fiddle to the famous Serengeti, but Lake Manyara is an underrated park that’s home to herds of elephants and the famous tree-climbing lions. Book yourself on to the Lake Shore Trail walking safari which starts near the hot springs and weaves through Acacia woodland and savannah. If you’re lucky you’ll witness the flocks of flamingos that come to the lake – swathes of vivid pink moving in the breeze. It’s a truly beautiful sight.

There are so many breathtaking sights in Tanzania that it’s difficult to fit them all onto one list. If you’re thinking about heading on a safari holiday, Tanzania is a great place to start. You can combine the thrill of a safari holiday with the relaxation that a beach break offers by jetting off to the nearby island of Zanzibar.
