In 1910, a farm called “Leliehoek” was bought to establish a village. After the finalizing the negotiations, they name the village “Clarens” to give honour to President Paul Kruger. Together with a commando of burghers, Paul Kruger defeated the Basotho at the Free State-Basotho War in 1865. He spent his last days in Clarens, Switzerland, and so the village was named after a Swiss town.
