Imaginative Ways To Celebrate Mother’s Day When You Can’t Be Together
How to Celebrate Mother’s Day From Afar
For many of us, social distancing will still be a reality this Mother’s Day. But that doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate with Mom from afar! While we would all love to be together again to celebrate family events, it may not be possible again this year. If you can’t be with your mother in person this May, try one of the following ideas for celebrating Mothers Day from afar:
Send Her Flowers
This one is a classic for good reason. Colorful flowers brighten everyone’s mood and let’s the recipient know for days that they are in your thoughts. If you haven’t been sending your Mom flowers every year for Mother’s Day, now is a great time to start. (And if you have, now certainly isn’t the time to stop!) We like to order our florals from Bouqs for a fun selection.
Have Food Sent to Her Home
Nothing says “I love you” like cooking for someone, but if distance is preventing you from doing that, then have food sent to your Mom’s home! Any of the popular food delivery apps will allow you to have food sent to someone else’s home, so pick something she loves and let her know when it’s on the way.
Share Brunch on a Video Call
Mother’s Day brunch is a favorite tradition, so don’t let it fall by the wayside. Join your Mom (and other treasured family members) for a pre-scheduled video call, and eat brunch while you chat. For even more fun, plan to make the same thing as everyone else on the call so you can see how each of your versions of the meal came out.
Write Her a Letter
You may have written letters to lovers and friends, but have you ever written one to your mom? Chances are that if you did, the last time was probably when you were at summer camp. We can almost guarantee that mom kept all those summer camp letters, and she’ll keep the one you send her this year, too! It doesn’t have to be overly long or sentimental; just a handwritten note telling her you miss her and sharing some of your favorite memories will be enough to make her smile (and maybe tear up a little bit, too). If you want to be extra sweet, tuck in a favorite photo of the two of you together.
Send Her a Playlist
Want to get creative? Make a playlist of all the songs that remind you of your years spent with your mom. Don’t forget to include the songs you played to death when you were a kid. They likely irritated her then, but they’ll be a sweet memory for her to laugh at now.
Take an Online Class with Her
There are classes for virtually anything online these days…from painting to cooking to meditating. Find an interest that you and Mom have in common and treat her to a class on the subject. It’ll be a fun thing for you to discuss over champagne on a video call afterward.
A Good Old Fashioned Phone Call
We’ve all been nagged to “call your mother” at least a few times in our adult lives, but this is the one day when you’ve really got to! If you do nothing else, make sure to give mom a call on her special day. Make sure to ask her about herself, rather than giving her too many updates on your life (unless of course she asks for them). At the end of the day, she just wants to connect with her favorite person — and that’s you!
Celebrating separately from your mom is no fun, but luckily, it’s only temporary. As we slog through these last months of social distancing, there are still plenty of ways to make Mom feel cherished on Mother’s Day. We can’t wait to see what you come up with!
