Different Ways You Can Become A Permanent Resident Of The US

If you want to make your way to permanently live in the United States of America, then you had better quickly disabuse yourself of any notion that it might be easy to do. Regardless of the route that you take, it’s going to require time, research, and money to get a green card to stay in the Unite States. However, there are a few different routes that you can take, and some might be more eligible for you than others.  Let’s take a look at the different avenues you can tae to become a permanent resident of the USA.

Win the diversity lottery

One way that every would-be immigrant should consider applying for is the diversity green card lottery. Every year, the US  government chooses 55,000 applicants from countries that are considered underrepresented amongst the current population. Check if you live in any of the countries that are applicable, and stay updated year after year, as this list can change. You can still pursue other methods of immigration while doing this. There are also other criteria you need to meet.

Getting married to a US citizen

If you have a partner who is a US citizen or lawful permanent resident, then becoming part of their family could also entitle you to a green card, eventually, too. However, this type of green card application tends to be heavily scrutinized, and you may need to prove your intent to marry and stay married. That said, relationships can break up, and it’s worth reading some green card divorce tips just to be aware of how you can handle that event. If it happens before you’re approved for a green card, you can be sent immediately back to your home country.

Find work in the US

If you’re up for changing your career, or you already have a career that sees you working with people stateside, or even invited to work there yourself, then you can apply for a work visa. Not all work visas are permanent, but they can open the path for you to apply for a green card through a labor certification. It’s worth noting that if you work in a rare field of work, with an advanced degree or other high-level qualifications, you can apply for a work-related green card regardless of whether you currently have a job or job offer there.

Get transferred to the USA by your work

You may not necessarily need to find a new job in order for your work to take you to the US. If you work for a company that has offices in the US, then getting a transfer to those offices in a managerial or executive role, for a company that has been doing business in the US for over a year, then you can begin the process of getting a green card this way. Of course, given that you need to already be working in a company that can transfer you to the US, it’s not the easiest way to make the move.

The methods mentioned above are not the only ways to get the green card that will allow you permanent residence in the US, so be sure you do your research to find out if there are any others you might be eligible for.
