Traveling to a new city doesn’t have to be just about food, shopping, and hotels. Having a true travel experience includes some education and exploring new cultures. As a local to the Atlanta area, I have found that there is so much that can be learned by visiting the city’s fun and fascinating museums!

I’m not talking about the museums that we all dreaded visiting as a child on a school field trip. No way!  If you believe that museums are boring, then you are clearly missing out! Atlanta Museums have so much more to offer for adults and children!

If you’re planning your next trip to the south, then make sure you include these 8 museums in Atlanta on your list of things to do:

HIgh Museum of Art

Conveniently located in Midtown Atlanta and next to the MARTA (Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority) public transportation system, the HIgh Museum of Art is one of Atlanta’s finest!  With featured collections in European, African, American, and folk art, there is a little something for all art enthusiasts.

This museum is perfect for all ages. If you’re looking to visit with young children,  Toddler Thursday’s is every week! Enjoy engaging art activities that the family will enjoy.  On Friday’s, you’ll find the adult crowd. The end of the work week is dedicated to adults.  Come to the High Museum to enjoy live jazz music from local Atlanta artists.  Walk the floor and have conversations about the featured galleries as you wind down from the monotonous workweek.

As the nation’s leading art museum in the Southeast, this needs to be on your list of places to visit!

FASH Museum of Fashion + Film at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD)

Only five years old, the SCAD museum opened its doors on October 3, 2015 to the Atlanta community. The museum is located on the SCAD campus in the main facility and is welcoming to all ages.  Lovers of all things fashion and and one-of-a-kind garments will definitely enjoy the displays. Walk through avant-garde exhibitions where you’ll even find designs from some world-renowned designers including Saint Laurent, Oscar de la Renta and Givenchy, Tom Ford, and Diane von Furstenburg.

Center for Puppetry Arts

Looking for something truly unique that the whole family will enjoy?  See all of your favorite puppet friends that you grew up with at the Center for Puppetry Arts! Since the late 70s, this Atlanta museum has been putting smiles on the faces of the many visitors every year.

With regularly scheduled programs and educational workshops, it’s no wonder this has been a true staple of the Atlanta community.  Come to the museum and see over 5,000 puppets and unique artifacts.  You may even have the chance to meet Kermit the Frog!

Fernbank Museum of Natural History

If you grew up in Atlanta, then you are well aware of the Fernbank Museum.  This is the museum that makes science and history fun!  As soon as you open the doors to the main entrance, you’ll be greeted by the 47-foot tall Giganotosaurus. But don’t worry, he doesn’t bite.

The Fernbank expands to multiple exhibition rooms and even has a 3D theater.  You can walk with dinosaurs and explore the Giants of the Mesozoic exhibit where you’ll learn about the largest known dinosaurs that walked the earth.  Or, how about you look through the Reflections of Culture exhibit to learn about the history of people through their photographs and artifacts!

The National Center for Civil and Human Rights

I would be remiss if I did not mention the Civil Rights museum.  Atlanta is home to Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Civil Rights movements that paved the way for so many.  If you visit no other museum at all, this is the one you should have at the top of your list!

Take a look at the past and how the Civil Rights movement was not only relevant in the 1960s but today as well.  This is the perfect educational experience for the entire family.

Chick-fil-A College Football Hall of Fame

Perhaps you’re looking for something more sporty.  If you love the game of football, then head  to the College Football Hall of Fame.  You can’t miss it! Located in the heart of downtown Atlanta, the building stands out as it is shaped like a football.

It’ll take you an estimated 2 hours to go through the main exhibits. You’ll find a collection of the greatest college football players and coaches. The museum is accessible by public transportation and you will see it right across from the iconic Centennial Olympic Park.  With restaurants and other attractions nearby, this is the perfect stop during your downtown tour.

Trap Music Museum

The name may throw you off but it’s absolutely worth the visit.  This one isn’t for everyone, but it’s surely amusing!

When the Trap Music Museum first opened, it had everyone turning their heads and Instagram was blowing up with photos from their experience. If you’re adding this to your sightseeing list, then note that the museum is currently only open on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.  If you come during the week, then you can check out The Escape Room which is open all week long.

You don’t have to be a fan of trap music to visit this one.  Snap a pic with the iconic pink car and have a little fun at the trap house!

Delta Flight Museum

Delta Airlines is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia and has provided visitors from all around the world with a unique experience. To visit this museum, you’ll have to venture south of the city about 10-20 minutes depending on traffic. I recommend this as a great stop before flying out as Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport is close by.

What makes this museum so unique? It’s located in Delta’s original 1940s-era aircraft hangars! It’s been newly renovated and the space doubles as an event venue. Let your imagination run wild while you pretend to be a pilot in the flight simulator.  View rare artifacts and super cool technology! If you love aviation, you won’t be disappointed!
